This is my final design that I had done with all my effort. I tried to make sure all of my audiences understand easily about this traditional dance of "Ulek Mayang"
Art
I hope all of my viewers will like my final artwork which is about "Ulek Mayang". I had came out with this idea that I had researched from many pictures in websites and my friends.
So, this is my idea development and i do not have it much. First in my sketch, I like to put the cloth of the dancer and those "mayang" in my design. The cloth i want to represent the smooth of the dance itself but i cant think of it and i came out with that sketch. I did not decide the color yet of this design. For the second of my sketch, I make half and half to balance my design same as Christina Mcphee artwork. I tried to make balance and I came out with some grids to get it balance. I want to put the cloth of the dancer and the face of those seven princess, but the design will look really compact and I need to simplified it.
Art
My idea development in my art is very simple and i can not get many sketches. So, for the first sketch, i want to create an art with using those seven princess cloth that not arranged on the paper. I put those seven princess cloth because i do not want all my viewers know directly that is the "Ulek Mayang" dance. I still using smooth concept in this artwork because i want to sustain the beautiful of this traditional dancing style. For the second artwork, I decided to choose those seven princess as my major thing in my artwork. So i put all six faces of those princess and one face of the oldest princess but for the oldest princess, i put at between of those six princess. Those all princess faces are really need to be balance to make my artwork look like 50% and 50% balanced. I had choose creepy background and some texture of vector to look more creepy but i still sustain the beautiful of this dance.
Process
Design
Step 1
I had pick a vintage background and look like a long time ago paper and I decided to put "Mayang" as my major design thing. So, I make a double-photo montage that just like Christina Mcphee style.
Step 2
My concept is all about the good and bad site of this dance and I make it more creepy of the other site of Mayang which is i change the color into dark blue and a little bit of black. Besides, I also put some of smooth vector that represent the beautiful of this dance.
Step 3
For the font, I make it sure the good site is more like fancy and beautiful font and for the bad site I pick a scary and more creepy font.
Art
Step 1
My artwork is all about heaven and those seven princess. So I picked a sky with many clouds to represent heaven with a double-photo montage style.
Step 2
Creepy is my concept and I try to apply in this artwork. So I had changed the sky into creepy background which is more gray, brown and black colors. I also put those six princess which is three at the right and three at the left with equally balanced.
Step 3
For the third step I had added some of swirl and smooth vectors to represent the beautiful of the dance and I make sure those vectors are in low capacity because I do not want it to be more darker than the background.
From the research and brainstorming i had do with my partner, i had make a simple sketch which is about design and art. I choose "creepy" as my major theme and so I can make those artwork more easily.
Conceptualization
My concept in this artwork and design is a about good and bad site of the "Ulek Mayang" traditional dance is. The good site is like the beautiful and how they dance so smooth. The bad site of Ulek Mayang is the dance used a shaman for a long time ago. It is also called evil spirit. In my design and artwork, i always used sky and have many of clouds because our ancestors said that those seven princess came from heaven. My design and artwork focus to adult or students that aged between 19-30 because to let them know all about "Ulek Mayang". Besides, i also choose to make my artwork feel creepy to look but they are have some beautiful things about this dance.
Context
-Christina Mcphee use the double-blind photo montage style and almost
her artwork is abstract. For the Ulek Mayang dance, the main focus is

oldest princess. So, we will blend it together, the Christina Mcphee
style and the element of ulek mayang dance and the main focus is the
oldest princess.

Hi ! okay...for the traditional dance
from Malaysia, we both choose Ulik Mayang, an history dance from Terengganu.
History about Ulik Mayang :
The Ulek Mayang is said to have its
origin in an ancient tale about a sea-princess who fell in love with a
fisherman. The princess abducted the fisherman's soul, leaving his body
unconscious. His friends entreated a bomoh (shaman) to
heal him. When the bomoh conducted the healing ritual to bring the fisherman's
soul back, the princess appeared and responded by calling on five of her
sisters to her aid. The battle between the bomoh and the six princesses
continued until the seventh and the eldest princess appeared and put an end to
it.
"I know your origins,” says the
eldest princess, and she commands everyone, "Let those from the sea to
return to the sea, and those from the land to return to the land."
The grateful bomoh and the
fisherman’s friends present the princess with coloured rice as an offering to
the spirits of the sea. This practice, along with the Ulek Mayang dance,
continued until the Islamic revival movement of recent decades.
why we choose ulek mayang?
We choose this traditional dance because of their dance and the
costume. The dance actually is for spiritual. The element of the dance,
gentle for the 1st song but when the song came to corus it become faster
but still gentle. so, the dance is gentle and beutiful. And for the
costume, I kinda like it because every 7 princess wear traditional crown
and when they dance they will hold the cloth for the start dance until
the end of the dance.
The difference between ulik mayang and other traditional dance, is
because of the song. some people believe if we sing the complete lyric
of ulek mayang song, they will came haunting he/she that sing the song
and he/she will exposed beams. Thats why, if we look the lyric the
princess 3 and 5 didn't mention. people didn't want to put the complete
lyric because they afraid something will happen to someone that sing the
song completely.
Christina McPhee born 1954,
Los Angeles California is an American painter, new media and video artist. She
currently lives on California's central coast and San Francisco.
Christina McPhee works in drawing as
a core practice, developing layered works that move from the paper into video
and photo montage. Her work is concerned with psychogenerative landscapes and
bioassemblage. In media arts, she moves scientific visualization into
alternative maps based around site-specific observation. Her drawings involve
linear, fugue-like structures that become topologic fields. We choose her
because of her creativity in photo montage. Most of her artworks in photo
montage are really abstract and have a lot of meanings behind her
artworks.
This is one example from her artwork
that we like most. This artwork called double-blind photo montage.
We choose her because of her drawing style. She use black and white
color on this artwork. When we saw this artwork, we feel creepy because
of its color and stress on the line and shape. We like the arrangement
of the single image on that artwork really abstract and attract our
eyes.
