Malaysian Traditional Dance

Assalamualaikum
Hi ! okay...for the traditional dance from Malaysia, we both choose Ulik Mayang, an history dance from Terengganu.

History about Ulik Mayang :
The Ulek Mayang is said to have its origin in an ancient tale about a sea-princess who fell in love with a fisherman. The princess abducted the fisherman's soul, leaving his body unconscious. His friends entreated a bomoh (shaman) to heal him. When the bomoh conducted the healing ritual to bring the fisherman's soul back, the princess appeared and responded by calling on five of her sisters to her aid. The battle between the bomoh and the six princesses continued until the seventh and the eldest princess appeared and put an end to it.
"I know your origins,” says the eldest princess, and she commands everyone, "Let those from the sea to return to the sea, and those from the land to return to the land."
The grateful bomoh and the fisherman’s friends present the princess with coloured rice as an offering to the spirits of the sea. This practice, along with the Ulek Mayang dance, continued until the Islamic revival movement of recent decades.

why we choose ulek mayang?
We choose this traditional dance because of their dance and the costume. The dance actually is for spiritual. The element of the dance, gentle for the 1st song but when the song came to corus it become faster but still gentle. so, the dance is gentle and beutiful. And for the costume, I kinda like it because every 7 princess wear traditional crown and when they dance they will hold the cloth for the start dance until the end of the dance.
The difference between ulik mayang and other traditional dance, is because of the song. some people believe if we sing the complete lyric of ulek mayang song, they will came haunting he/she  that sing the song and he/she will exposed beams. Thats why, if we look the lyric the princess 3 and 5 didn't mention. people didn't want to put the complete lyric because they afraid something will happen to someone that sing the song completely.

Christine Mcphee

Christina McPhee born 1954, Los Angeles California is an American painter, new media and video artist. She currently lives on California's central coast and San Francisco.

Christina McPhee works in drawing as a core practice, developing layered works that move from the paper into video and photo montage. Her work is concerned with psychogenerative landscapes and bioassemblage. In media arts, she moves scientific visualization into alternative maps based around site-specific observation. Her drawings involve linear, fugue-like structures that become topologic fields. We choose her because of her creativity in photo montage. Most of her artworks in photo montage are really abstract and have a lot of meanings behind her artworks.

This is one example from her artwork that we like most. This artwork called double-blind photo montage.

We choose her because of her drawing style. She use black and white color on this artwork. When we saw this artwork, we feel creepy because of its color and stress on the line and shape. We like the arrangement of the single image on that artwork really abstract and attract our eyes.
